Mekong Delta

The southern portion of Vietnam is dominated by the mighty Mekong River and its delta region. This river is an incredible sight to see as it is 3 km wide at one point and is teaming with boats of all shapes and sizes as the life on delta continues every day. It is here that the river diverges into nine tributaries and creates a very fertile and heavy vegetated area that is the home major fruit producing area for Vietnam.

Here we toured several of the islands along the Mekong River, by river boat we visited My tho and tortoise island and tasted local fruits, treats and even hugged a snake. From there we took a smaller boat through the natural Tan Tach canal lined with water palms, giving you the sense of being in an incredibly thick jungle away from all civilization.

We then took the highway, a small road with a speed limit of 40 km, with rice shops and Honda repair shops every 100 metres, to the river city of Can Tho. Here we got up real early and took part of the floating market along the Mekong River. This amazing market comes to life every morning as hundreds of local producers sell there goods on the river, everything from pineapples, to shrimp to even your fresh brewed coffee. We have toured many markets in our travels throughout the world but nothing is like was local the local market at Can Tho, with its muddy walkways lined with sellers peddling everything from live fish (jumping out of the tanks) to sheep liver to frogs and snakes and even bras. The sights and smells of this market were out of this world and to my amazement Laurence even kept his breakfast down.

The Mekong Delta is a heavily populated, lush green paradise that surprised us at every bend of this most powerful river.
