Hong Kong

Hong Kong @ night

As soon as we landed at the airport on Lantau Island and made our way along the freeway and to the Kowloon Peninsula, we felt at home in one of our all time favourite cities to visit, Hong Kong. We have visited this city several times before, and love the energy, architecture, lights, sounds and smells of this most dynamic and modern of all the Asian cities.

Chinese New Years Hong Kong Style

The incredible skyline of the Hong Kong Harbour is a sight like no other, with its world famous buildings, scenic harbour and neon light shows every night, a photographers dream and probably the most distinctive skyline in the world. We rediscovered parts of the city we are familiar with and found new areas and enjoyed many new structures as this city is a work in progress and never done. The stunning architecture in Hong Kong is world renown and every style is evident in this mix of residential and commercial high-rises in one of the most densely populated places on earth. We crossed the famous Hong Kong Harbour several times using the old charm of the Star Ferry and rode the world’s longest escalator to shop and eat in the trendy district of Soho.

One morning we caught the very fast subway system back to Lantau Island to take a tour on The 360, a cable car ride that rises above the harbour to the largest seated Buddha in the world and the Po Lin Monastery. Here we climbed the mountain, took in the temples and dealt with the large number of tourists, boy has this attraction changed over the years.

A highlight of our trip to Hong Kong was reconnecting with a good friend from Calgary, Hilda. She use to work at the city with me but moved to Hong Kong several years ago. She invited us to a choir performance that she was part of at the IFC Tower (the tallest building in Hong Kong) with her group called Brio. It was such a pleasure to here the performance, and to see Hilda so very happy as she was the feature performer on two numbers. It was great catching up with her and seeing her so very happy in her home of Hong Kong.

But Hong Kong is best known for its most incredible shopping. There is no other city on this planet with the shopping options and opportunities like Hong Kong, with Prada and Burberry on every street corner and camera shops only feet apart. It took everything we had to restrain our shopping desires, as we are at the end of the trip and it is time to be frugal. But we did window shop and this city is a shoppers dream and next time we will come with empty suitcases.

We love this city and can’t wait to return to this most unique and dynamic city called Hong Kong.

Next stop Honolulu!!!
